Can anyone even survive the warmest season without something suitable to put on their feet? Boots and trainers are all well and good for casual excursions throughout the autumn, winter and spring, but when it comes to summer you are probably going to need something a little more lightweight. It’s just common sense. It is with this firmly in mind that we re-present to you the sandal.
Sandals are known for getting a bit of a bad reputation during the summer. There is the notorious ‘socks and sandals’ combination that reminds everyone of their dad during that embarrassing summer holiday when you were a teenager, and there is that one friend, or the guy at work, that wears them all year round, no matter the weather. But good news! Due to a resurgence at last year’s London Fashion Show and other shows around the world, sandals are once again coming back into fashion. But your friend and dad are not the only ones who need to be pleased at this news, and here are some reasons why.
The specific type of sandal that all of the fashion magazines and websites are most excited about is the gladiator sandal. Yes, the type that Russell Crowe wore. More secure than the other types of sandals, gladiator sandals have extra straps that may extend all the way up the calf. They are designed specifically for ease of movement and maximum wear in hot weather, making them perfect for the summer season. This works even if you are not planning on getting in any fights to the death while wearing them. In fact, they may make that walk to work on a sweltering summer day feel a bit less lethal.
But let’s say that for some reason you don’t particularly want to suggest that you are a deadly roman athlete. Luckily, gladiator sandals are not the only footwear coming back into fashion. Comfortable flat shoes as a whole are appearing more and more in fashion shows, and this is great news for those who want something quick and easy to wear on a daily basis. Casual sandals are easy to find, and even flip-flops are more acceptable now than they have been in a long time, so make the most of it!
But, as we are sure you are aware, sandals aren’t necessarily just for casual wear. Once again, formal sandals have featured in some of the most prolific shows in the business, in both heeled and flat varieties. Elegant or complicated designs are both suitable, depending on what you are wearing with them obviously, so dig into the back of your wardrobe and maybe reenergise an old look for your next summer party.
Good news all around then. Tell your friend they have been making the right foot-related choice all along. Tell your dad he is finally allowed to wear the sandals again. But don’t let him have too much free footwear reign; socks and sandals are still something that nobody wants to see.
